On September 11, 2001, the lives of thousands of Americans where changed forever. Out of tragedy, the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance was established in an effort to engage Americans in charitable service as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law.
Here at the Minnesota Zoo, we will join other organizations throughout the country to unite in service. Volunteers, as individuals and as groups, can sign up in four-hour shifts from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or noon -4 p.m. on Friday, September 11 to provide support to the Minnesota Zoo. Volunteer opportunities include active outdoors tasks like removing buckthorn, laying mulch, cleaning exhibits and painting. Also available are opportunities that include more sedentary tasks like preparing craft projects for children who attend classes at the Zoo and making paper mache enrichment items for our collection of animals at the Zoo.
To become part of this 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance volunteer event, all you need to do is call the Zoo at 952-431-9202. Leave your name, phone number, and a brief message and we will call you back to schedule your offer of service. Not only will you be providing a valuable service to the Minnesota Zoo, you also will pay tribute to those affected by the attacks of September 11, 2001 and experience the true value of giving freely of your time and talents.
